Throughout the day people around us observe the way we move our eyes, shake our hands, the way we walk, upheld our head and this information , consciously and unconsciously helps them to discover a part of our personality , especially at the workplace.
Psychologist and Relationship Counsellor Shivani Misri Sadhoo shares that body language is one of the vital factors that determine a person’s success both in professional and personal life. Today she shares some vital points;
1. Always try to keep your posture relaxed: Remember to stand up straight, but don’t tighten up so much that you look rigid and nervous. If you’re a natural sloucher, make sure to check your posture sporadically and straighten up as needed. A hunched back can make you look unsure of yourself, or even if you feel the other person doesn’t care too much about the situation. Standing or sitting up straight and tall can not only make you appear more confident, but it can actually make you feel more confident as well!
2. Maintain an appropriate amount of eye contact: By maintaining an eye contact with the person you’re talking to or you are meeting for the first time will communicate to that person that you’re paying attention to what she or he is saying. Good eye contact tells that are you are not only paying attention, but you’re interested in what the other person is saying. Whenever there is a natural pause in the conversation, feel free to casually glance at something else. Eye contact is appreciated , but nonstop staring can be a little unsettling!
Also, pay attention to how much you’re blinking. It can be an unconscious thing, but rapid blinking can make you look nervous or uncomfortable. If you find yourself blinking a lot, make a conscious effort to slow it down.
3. Always keep your hands still, on your lap or at your sides. Generally, when people are nervous they commonly play with their hands or fingers. So always try to keep your hands still, or clasped on your lap if you’re sitting. Avoid touching your hair or adjusting your clothes, which can make you look anxious, unsure of yourself, or even deceitful
4. Widen your stance. If you want to appear confident when you're meeting someone, stand your ground! If you keep your feet closed or crossed, you're more likely to come off as nervous or insecure. Instead, stand with your feet apart in a "power stance posture ," and show everyone around you that you feel confident of yourself.
