Across the world, Valentine’s Day is one of the most popular times of the year to propose. It’s a day when the world celebrates ‘love’ and that makes it special and wonderful for everyone, especially for the youngsters.
At a young age falling in love, starting a new relationship, having a girlfriend or boyfriend and so on all sounds too exciting and that is why Relationship Expert and Marriage Counsellor Shivani Misri Sadhoo suggests teenagers and their parents be alert and careful during the Valentine’s Day and keep the following points in mind.
1. Don’t meet a stranger who has contacted you on the social network - no matter how good the person has been on Facebook, Whatsapp or a chat or how much the person pressurises you. There has been a number of cases in recent times, where criminals have disguised themselves with false identities on the social network and tried to reach young girls and boys with criminal intentions.
2. Do not take food or drink from anyone at a party - Date rape drugs & sedatives are real and are available to people with criminal minds. These drugs can easily be put in soda, food or alcohol on Valentine’s party. Drugged teens do not always pass out. They may walk, talk and act differently. If your teen notices a friend acting differently or waking with a loss of memory, call for help and go straight to the hospital for medical attention. Reactions to date rape drugs can be life threatening.
3. Keep family and friends in the loop
Discuss with your teenager to keep his/her best friend and anyone in family member always in a loop and tell them where they are going, when they will return, and how to reach them. If plans change, tell them to text you first or their friend the new details of where they will be.
4. Stay in safe public places
Teenagers often love to go off the beaten path. Ask your teen to stay in the safe place among a crowd if they are going to meet a friend.
