Most of us when we think about what makes us happy? ; our mind immediately reminds us the unfulfilled desires that we crave in our life, like a dream house, dream car, dream phone and so on. In other words, a large percentage of the population who can afford proper food and clothing associate their happiness with materialistic goals.
Counsellor Shivani Misri Sadhoo says it is very easy for us to create a list of what we want from the world to give us in today’s world of conspicuous consumption. It is amazing how many “things” everyone seems to have in their lives – and how many more things they might desire with believing that it will make them feel better about themselves.
Hence Counsellor Shivani says that to be happy, focus on following key areas to experience a fulfilled, blissful and happy life.
1. Stop Cribbing And Be Happy
A big percentage of the population spends their life focusing primarily on their unfortunate incidences of life. They identify themselves as unhappy due to their weight issues, domestic violence, losing a loved one so on and so forth. They start to believe that as long as their unfortunate incidences or facts exist, they cannot really be happy in life. Such people forget to realize that a vast population in the world is living in far worst conditions. Every day thousands of children are born with abnormalities, physical deformation, and thousands die because of starvation, crimes, and list is endless.
Hence stop cribbing with what’s wrong in your life as everyone here has some or other problems. Start counting your blessings – the first step towards happiness.
2. Keep Your Mind in Present.
According to a study by psychologists Matthew Killingsworth and Daniel Gilbert of Harvard University, adults spend only about 50% of their time in the present moment. When people’s minds were wandering, the scientists collected information on happiness levels. They found that when people are in the present moment, they are also at their happiest, no matter what they are doing. In other words while doing any activity, you like it or not, you are happier when you are 100% consumed in that activity than doing a task while being absent minded.
When we keep our mind in present, we fully experience the things around us. Instead of getting caught up in a race to accomplish more things faster, we slow down and are actually with the people we want to be with, immersed in the ideas being discussed and fully engaged in our projects.
By being present, you will enter a state of flow that is highly productive and will become more charismatic, making people around you feel understood and supported. You will have good relationships, which is one of the biggest predictors of success and happiness.
3. Train Your Mind To Focus On Present.
In today's time, everyone’s mind races all the time with office deadlines, pending EMIs, kid issues etc. In such a scenario, how a person can keep his/her mind in present?
An effective practice for bringing the mind back into the present is to focus your attention on your breath. When you find your mind wandering, take a deep breath in; as you breathe out, let go of your thoughts—as if you were consciously exhaling them—and bring your attention back to the breathing. You may have to do this exercise repeatedly, whenever you become caught up in a flurry of thoughts. Practice it daily with meditation or yoga.
4. Learn to Experience Pleasure.
Today one can witness that people are sitting in restaurants and checking their phones or they sit on the dinner table and talk on the phone with their friends, their colleagues or their boss.
So to be happy, give 100% attention when you experience pleasant moments, be it emotional or sensual, savour the sensation or experience completely. Instead of talking on the phone while you eat, enjoy your food to the fullest.
